Posters
Posters belong to the Library’s ephemera collection.
Due to the change in Act on Collecting and Preserving Cultural Materials in 2008, posters are no longer part of our legal deposit copy collection.
Nevertheless, the Library deposits posters related to University of Jyväskylä, sports, Central Finland and the elections, as well as movie posters and some advertisements of major brands as examples.
The posters range in age from about 150 years old to the present day.
Because JYU’s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is unique in Finland, we list the sports posters (pdf) that are included in the collection every year to better enable research on them. Note that you will not find posters in the library database.
Domestic movie posters (pdf) have been registered since 1920. In practice, however, the accumulation of these ended in 2008.
The graphic artist Ilmari Sysimetsä designed the poster for the Helsinki Olympic Games. His proposal won the design competition for the official poster of the 1940 Olympic Games, but the Games were canceled due to the Second World War. When the decision on the new Olympic Games was made in 1947, the only changes to his design were the number of the Games, the dates and Finland’s new national borders.
