Heikki Waris Collection
In the spring of 1977, the heirs of Heikki Waris (1901–1989), a professor of Finnish social policy at the University of Helsinki and a member of the Academy of Finland, donated books, duplicated publications, offprints, and congress and fellowship material from the personal library of Professor Waris to the University of Jyväskylä Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
The collection is divided into two parts.
The first part of the collection, numbering nearly 1,000 volumes, consists mainly of Finnish and foreign literature on social policy, social security and sociology, acquired by Professor Waris from abroad or received as donations (for example, doctoral dissertations and offprints). Most of the books were printed from the 1940s through the 1960s. The items are listed in the JYKDOK database.
JYKDOK also contains information on additional material that Professor Waris had placed between the books. These include invitations to the public defence of a doctoral thesis, information on the person in question, or on articles written on the publication. There is also a paper printout of the publications available at the department and at the Collection Centre.
The second part of the collection consists of 40 folders of mostly congress documents and memoranda produced by international and Finnish organizations on social welfare, refugee issues, development co-operation and church activity. Information on this part of the collection is not available in JYKDOK, but there is a paper printout of the collection available at the department and at the Collection Centre.
The Waris Collection is available for researchers at the Collection Centre (see also a list of material that is not in JYKDOK, in Finnish, pdf). Use of the collection can be discussed with the Library Customer Service.
