The Unknown Treasures of Our Forests

Exhibition from June 11th to September 29th, 2019 at the Natural History Museum

What crawls along the forest floor? What's on the hull of the pine? What did you miss there? The Finnish forest teems species, many are unknown to us.

In 2003–2016, a nationwide research program (Puutteellisesti tunnettujen ja uhanalaisten metsälajien tutkimusohjelma, PUTTE) explored species, distribution, abundance and habitat requirements of poorly known groups of organisms. PUTTE program has provided much information about the secret life of our forests, which can be used, for example, to protect biodiversity.

The Unknown Treasures of Our Forests raises the species that are unnoticeable in the spotlight. In addition to magnificent photographs and information, the exhibition also features Seppo Leinonen's humorous comics of the adventures of the poorly known creatures in our forests.

The Unknown Treasures of Our Forests is based on the production of a photograph exhibition by the Finnish Environment Institute, the Ministry of the Environment, PUTTE and METSO program, supplemented by the expertise of the Kuopio Natural History Museum,.

The exhibition is on show from June 11th to September 29th, 2019 at the Natural History Museum (Vesilinna, Ihantolantie 5, Jyväskylä). The museum is open Tue-Fri 11–18, Sat-Sun 12–17 (on holidays, see website).
