Our Local Heritage in Literature

Collection Exhibition 10.8.2017-27.1.2018 at the University Library Lobby

Finnish local heritage studies can be traced all the way back to the 1600's when the Swedish Antique Collegium began researching local heritage, including historical sites and monuments in Finland.

Towards the end of the 19th century interest in local heritage arose and the work got more organised. Books and periodicals about local heritage were published in increasing amounts. The periodical Kotiseutu was one of the earliest ones, the first number being published in 1909.

Concerning local heritage books, one of the most important contributors was The Finnish Literature Society, whose contributions are still prominent in the field of cultivating local heritage.

The central organising body for local heritage work in Finland is The Finnish Local Heritage Federation, founded in 1949. Their purpose is to promote recognition of the diversity of Finnish culture and regional cultures in Finland, as well as to develop and support local heritage projects.

The Finnish Local Heritage Federation also gives awards to the Local Heritage Book of the Year. On display in this exhibition are the awarded books from 2009 to 2016. In addition, various other pieces from different regions and time periods were selected. All of the copies are from the Jyväskylä University Library's Legal Deposit Collection.

The annual Local Heritage Celebrations will be held in Jyväskylä during 10.-13.8.2017.
