Open Access/Parallel Publishing

Open Access is a new form of electronic publishing. Digital Open Access publications can be read free of charge on the internet by anyone. They can also be freely copied, printed and linked.

Open Access Publishing in Jyväskylä University

Jyväskylä University promotes open publishing by offering an open publishing archive JYX for the use of the staff members. JYX is an institutional repository which contains digital materials created at the University of Jyväskylä. It is a place where you can self-archive your papers, share research data or store your digitised image or multimedia collections.

Why Open Access? Why JYX? : the benefits

  • Increase the visibility of your material
  • Increase the impact of your research (please see the following studies)
  • Entrust storage and preservation to the JYX-team
  • Avoid broken links by relying on stable URLs
  • Comply with funder’s requirements to deposit research output in an open repository
  • Store and link research data to related articles
  • Simplify re-use of material for teaching purposes
  • Manage your material through your own website
  • Avoid publication fees : depositing in JYX is free of charge

What may be deposited?

JYX  is a repository for research output and other scholarly content. Deposited material can be in many forms, for example:

  • articles
  • research papers
  • reports
  • conference papers
  • electronic journals
  • images
  • data sets
  • any other material that is relevant to any particular subject

If you have a greater body of material or multiple collections to deposit, please contact the JYX Team to discuss a bulk upload.

About file formats

In order to facilitate preservation of the deposited content stored in JYX we need to ascertain that the content is stored in file formats that are either open or well known and described. Adobe PDF is recommended for the publications and TIFF format for the images.

Copyright issues

If you are planning to include your work in an open-access repository, be sure you have retained the copyright, or that you have sufficient legal rights in your agreement with a publisher. If there are several authors, please take care you have asked the permission to publish from all the other authors.

SHERPA/RoMEO is a service, which lists publishers and their associated copyright agreements. Use the SHERPA/RoMEO service to search for a publisher, or a particular journal, to see what rights are assigned to publishers and which are retained by the author.

How to deposit?

Self-archiving in JYX is limited to the employees of the University of Jyväskylä. If you are interested in depositing, please feel free to contact the JYX Team, e-mail: jyx@jyu.fi. Further information also from Marja-Leena Harjuniemi, e-mail: marja-leena.harjuniemi@jyu.fi
