Arto Ojala - Distinguished Promoter of Open Science 2015

Arto Ojala, a Doctor of Economic Sciences, has been awarded for his work as a promoter of open science at the University of Jyväskylä. Ojala is a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.

The award is based on Ojala’s exemplary participation in parallel publishing. Parallel publishing means that a copy of an article already published in a scientific publication is made available free of charge, for instance, through an open institutional repository.

Arto Ojala has already parallel published forty-five of his articles in the University of Jyväskylä’s digital archive JYX. They have so far been downloaded over 22,000 times.

- Open science offers an easy access to publications for a wider audience. By means of openness, some of my articles that would otherwise be difficult to obtain have also gained more attention, Arto Ojala states.

In addition to promoting parallel publishing, Ojala has made use of the social media services aimed at scholars for publicizing their research. Ojala’s publications have been viewed or downloaded almost as many times in these networks as they have been in JYX.

- Through these networks, I'm also able to follow my colleagues’ research and publication activity effortlessly, Ojala notes.

Ojala, who published his doctoral thesis in 2008, has also retrospectively parallel published his earlier research so that his entire list of publications between the years 2007-2015 is comprehensively available in JYX.

- Parallel publishing in the TUTKA research registry is effortless and doesn't take up too much time. The permissibility of parallel publishing has not concerned me either since the University Library advises in matters concerning licenses, Ojala describes the process.

Pekka Olsbo, Head of Publications at the Jyväskylä University Library, states in the reasons for the award that Ojala's efforts in parallel publishing and the considerably wide visibility of his work on the Internet are an excellent example of the influence potential of open science.

The certificate of honor was presented to Arto Ojala at a seminar on Thursday, October 22, 2015  promoting open science through parallel publishing organized by the initiative Suomi rinnakkaistallentamisen mallimaaksi. This was the first year that the award was presented.
