Jyväskylä University Library - at the Heart of Campus

Linking web resources

Why is linking important?

Using web resources offered by library as study material can be improved by clear reference practice and by linking the resources directly to study materials. The student can familiarise himself with high quality resources easily in the university network or remotely a home 24/7.

User rights of web materials

The library buys for customers' use web materials of which the use is dictated by user rights. Web materials subject to charge have been defined to operate only in the university network or with the university’s user accounts. Members of the university can log in to the network with their own user accounts and use the materials from outside JU network.

Remote use

The university offers two ways for remote use.

1.    Remote use offered by the library (Nelli, JYKDOK)

2.    VPN connection managed by the Information Management Centre

NB: These instructions do not apply to VPN connections.

Permanent links

It is recommended to avoid links copied from the address bar of the browser. These links often have session-based settings and may stop working in the course of time. JYKDOK, Nelli and Nelli’s SFX linking service offer means of linking web materials to your study material using permanent and centrally managed links.

Checklist

  • What you see on your desktop in the university network is not necessarily the same the student sees on his/her desktop at home.
  • DO NOT make a link from the address bar of your browser!
  • A session-based address may become obsolete.
  • The link does not normally work in remote use, and the student will be unable to access the material directly but must search for it again in the library’s web materials.
  • Always make sure that the links to our web materials you handed out also work off-campus, i.e., in your web material, make links according to these instructions.

Three ways to make links

1.    Copy links to e-books in JYKDOK
2.    Copy links to databases in Nelli
3.    Copy links to e-journals and e-articles in Nelli’s SFX menu

Links made in this way allow remote use of web materials and are persistent. The library manages these links for you.

Make links to E-books in JYKDOK

Almost all e-book collections acquired by the library can be found in JYKDOK.

  1. Search for the e-book in JYKDOK
  2. Open Record View, copy Permanent link to this page at the page bottom and paste it to your material.
    E.g. https://jykdok.linneanet.fi/vwebv/holdingsInfo?sk=en_FI&bibId=989360
      • First, click the link to open the page in JYKDOK. Secondly, open the link that leads to the material (Links).
      • The library system directs the user to remote access where needed.

      • Managing individual links is easier when links management is done centrally at the library.

Make links to databases in Nelli

First find the material in Nelli

A Permanent link to this page is created on almost every page bottom in Nelli. When you use this link:

  • The student is always directed to this page from where he can continue using the material by himself.
  • The material can be used both in the university network and from a remote location. Nelli directs the user to remote access service where needed.
  • Links management is done centrally at the library, i.e. the teacher does not have to worry about whether the links work or not.
  • The student sees the database description and the possible restrictions of use.

Make a link to page Search in Database

Nelli

Make a link to page Database List

Nelli list

Make a link via Database List. Nelli is not shown to the student

  • On page Database List, an Actions menu appears on the end of the line when the cursor is held on the Database Name line.

Nelli directlink

  • The Actions menu (which by default is hidden) allows you to create a persistent link to your material that also works from a remote location. The link takes the student directly to the material without Nelli.
    E.g. http://www.nelliportaali.fi/link/FIN00880
  • To see Actions menu:
  1. Move the mouse cursor to the end of the line Database Name.
  2. Click Actions menu which is now visible.
  3. In the menu, copy Persistent link to the database
  • When the student uses this link, he is always directed to this particular page listing the databases, and he can go on using the material.
  • The link works both in the university network and from a remote location. Nelli directs the customer to the remote use service if needed.
  • Managing the links is done centrally at the library.

Link E-journals and E-articles in SFX menu

Search the journal in Nelli’s Find e-journal

  1. Search the journal in Nelli’s Find e-journal.
  2. Click the red SFX icon.

    Journal title

  3. Click the link Linkki tälle sivulle lyhytlinkkipalvelussa

SFX

Copy the lower URL link Short URL for sharing with other organizations. Paste it to your material.  Eg.: http://bib.fi/GLFqBA/global

SFX-linkki

  • It is recommended to use the link Short URL for sharing with other organizations, if the material is used by students, who are not members of our university.  The link directs these users to their own universities’ or polytechnics' SFX menus (Nelli), where the student can check whether he has access to this material in his own organization.
  • The upper Short URL only works for JU students in the university network or with user accounts off-campus.

Link articles in SFX menu

  1. Search the article with Nelli search tools.

    SFX_artikkelihaku

  2. Click the red SFX icon.
  3. Click the link Linkki tälle sivulle lyhytlinkkipalvelussa (as in Find e-journal).
  4. Copy the lower URL link Short URL for sharing with other organizations. Paste it to your material.
    E.g. http://bib.fi/GKxNtg/global

    SFX_artikkelihaku2

Problems?

If you have any problems, please contact the library.

  • Links cannot be made in all Nelli pages.
  • You find an article in a database’s own interface. How can I make a link to it?
    • Some databases offer you persistent links, but the library cannot guarantee that they work, e.g. when changes take place in the database.
    • As some databases support the SFX service of JU, it is recommended to try to find the SFX links primarily in Nelli.
    • The linking techniques described here are best applied to linking web material acquired by the library in the university’s internal use.
    • NB! When links are used in the university’s external communication, the customer is required to have either the user account of JU or an account of another Finnish university belonging to the HAKA federation. In the latter case, the material must also belong to the collections of the library in question. If the user does not have the accounts, or the material has not been acquired in the above-mentioned organizations’ collections, the customer cannot use the direct link to read the article contents.
