The Waris Collection

In spring 1977, the heirs of Heikki Waris (1901-1989), a professor of Finnish social policy at the University of Helsinki and a member of the Academy of Finland, donated books, duplicated publications, offprints, and congress and fellowship material from the library of professor Waris to the University of Jyväskylä Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

The collection is divided into two parts: a collection of 999 volumes consists mainly of Finnish and foreign literature on social policy, social security and sociology, acquired by professor Waris from abroad or received as donations (for example, doctoral dissertations and offprints). Most of the books are printed in the 1940’s – 1960’s.

The Waris Collection is available for reading room use at the Mattilanniemi Library, and the items are listed in the JYKDOK database. JYKDOK also contains information on additionl material that professor Waris had placed between the books. These include invitations to the public defence of a doctoral thesis, information on the person in question, or on articles written on the publication. There is also a paper printout of the publications both at the department and at the Mattilanniemi Library.

The second part of the collection is housed at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy (YFI). It consists of 40 folders of mostly congress documents and memoranda produced by international and Finnish organizations on social welfare, refugee issues, development co-operation and church activity. A paper printout of the collection is available both at the Department and at the Mattilanniemi Library.
