RefWorks contract expires – transfer your references by 28th February 2022

JYU’s subscription to RefWorks reference management software expires at the end of 2021 because of problems with the data protection agreement required by the service provider. Subscription will end for both the current ProQuest RefWorks and the previous Legacy version. Purchasing a personal RefWorks license is not possible.

If you want to keep your RefWorks references, you should export them to another reference management system by the 28th of February 2022. Unfortunately, pdf files stored in RefWorks do not automatically transfer with the reference data. Please note that if you have used RefWorks with Word or Google Docs (RefWorks Citation Manager or Write-n-Cite), you cannot directly proceed to add references to the file with another reference management program.

Options for RefWorks are Zotero ( and Mendeley ( Both can be downloaded for free from their web pages. Zotero and Mendeley are also available on JYU staff computers (through Software Center) and will be added to some of the workstations in the University's computer labs and working spaces.

A guide video on how to transfer the reference data is coming in early fall.

Open Science Centre will begin to instruct mainly on the use of Zotero. General RefWorks trainings will switch to Zotero and provide guidance for reference data transfer.

Zotero training is available next time 3.2. or 1.4.
