Pihkala Collection

Professor Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala (1888-1981) was an enthusiastic athlete, a jack of all trades when it comes to sport and a developer of the Finnish baseball. Lauri Pihkala was nominated professor for his accomplishments in sport in 1946 and was awarded honorary doctorate in Sports Science in 1969.

According to Professor Pihkala's last will a collection of Finnish and foreign sports literature from the late 1800th century to the 1970's was donated to the Jyväskylä University Library. The collection consists of literature on sport and body culture, literature on political history, military forces and Nazi movement as well as an unique America collection. The books reveal in an extraordinary way Professor Pihkala's reading habits and remarks his made on the books.

Besides literature Pihkala's collection includes magazines and correspondence.

The Pihkala Collection is being catalogued to the JYKDOK online catalogue. The material can be requested for study purposes and used in the Library readings rooms.

The Pihkala photograph and item collection is located in the Provincial Archives of Jyväskylä.
