Easy Access to the Past with the ProQuest Historical Newspapers

A New York Times advertisement from 1895

History students and researchers at Jyväskylä University were happy to get their hands on a new, broad primary source, when the library bought five new newspapers into its Historical Newspapers-collection.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers is a newspaper digital archive offering full-text and full-image articles for significant newspapers dating back to the 18th Century.

The collection at Jyväskylä University has already included access to the archives of the New York Times.

After discussions with the staff at the Department of History and Ethnology, the following newpapers were added:

The ProQuest Historical Newspapers - archive provides a diverse collection of primary resources for researchers. Every issue of each title includes the complete paper cover-to-cover, with full-page and article images in easily downloadable PDF format.

According to Research Fellow Simo Mikkonen of the Department of History and Ethnology, the Historical Newspapers –database is a very important tool for history students and researchers. The archive of the New York Times has been one of the most used primary sources amongst students.

Mikkonen is also pleased with the new acquisitions:

“These acquisitions give us a much broader view of different issues. The points of view of these newspapers differ from one another for example when it comes to international relations.”

Mikkonen is happy with the way students have found the database as a source for their research. There is still work to be done, however, with marketing the resource:

“Many students use these resources in their theses, but don’t necessarily use the whole potential the database and its functionalities would have to offer.”
